Subject: Now the die must fall..
1990-What a crazy year.
The band was hitting on all cylinders right up to Tinley Park. Then Brent was taken from among the living.
But before it could even sink in..
Fall Tour was upon us..With Vince and some guy I wrongly considered a pop star Bruce Hornsby
both working to fill some really big shoes.
Europe 90 got confirmed and I was up in the air but then I caught the MSG Dark Star and I was like this is going to be HOT!
So sold the old jazz record collection and off i went.
I lived , I loved , heck I suffered, I ate a lot of Nutella and French Bread.
oh yeah, I danced my butt off!!!
These were part of the last shows of a wild year.
I made it as far as Denver
and then I headed back to home to N.Y.C
to patch my bones.
So these shows are a nice revelation to me
I dig the 1st set list, 10 tunes
Pretty much all classics
The band is loose and jams

And related to the Valley Road
It was an instant DEAD TUNE
incredible for Dancin up a storm
When Hornsby & his piano packed it in
it was pretty much the end of days

"The Valley Road"

Sometimes I lead, sometimes I follow
This time I'll go where she wants me to go
She said maybe today, maybe tomorrow
Deep in the woods down the low valley road

While no one was lookin' on the old plantation
He took her all the way down the long valley road
They sent her away not too much later
And left him walking down the old valley road
Walk on
Walk on, walk on alone
Walk on, walk on
Walk on alone, alone

Out in the hall, they were talking in a whisper
Everybody noticed she was gone awhile
Somebody said she's gone to her sister's
Everybody knew what they were talking about

Whoa, while no one was lookin' on the old plantation
He showed her what they do down the long valley road
She came back around like nothing really happened
And left him standing on the old valley road
Walk on
Walk on, walk on alone
Walk on, walk on
Walk on, walk on, on the valley road

Standing like a stone on the old plantation
The rich old man would have never let him in
Good enough to hire, not good enough to marry
When it all happens, nobody wins
Walk on
Walk on, walk on alone
Walk on, walk on
Walk on, walk on alone, alone

Subject: 25th Anniversary of Big Nig's Acid test! ( first show as Grateful Dead)
Yes I concur with many of the previous reviews. The night before was my first post Brent show and I wasn't that impressed. This night laid any doubt's to rest. I'm kinda surprised nobody mentioned the Birdsong??? I knew Hornsby was gonna be good but what Vinnie did on Birdsong too thinking " yeah they can keep him... He belongs " agree its THE Best Valley Road. Also like 12/30/90 ( last one ) too bad they stopped playing it, think the folks back east would have dug it. Eyes was gorgeous, esp.the unique ( for it's time ) '74 ish jam they worked up.
Bruce is awesome on Lovelight. Also heard the same that Uncle Pete did about the fellas getting wet again for this night. Who knows if it really went down but I'm sure glad I got good and soaked up for it!

Subject: You had to be there
I agree with the sentiment of the earlier reviewer, in that a recording of a show at the Oakland Coliseum can only approximate the experience- and the audio alone can never really convey what was happening in the room. I mean, big balls of energy would tangibly roll across the floor. People commonly glowed in the dark inside the Oakland coliseum. I could go on but some who were there know exactly what I mean. I personally was, uh, finely adjusted for this show. I experienced brain growth that evening. It was a profound experience for me.

I will be amazed if it bears out in the recording, but Mickey Hart pretty much went ape-shit on the beam this night. I remember this clearly- he got physically violent with the thing, and it ended with the beam getting hurled off the side of the stage. It would be cool to have this corroborated.

Great show.

GRENDEL you should check 5 days after this show 12/09/90 @ Compton Terrace Amphitheater Az. It has same feel but way, way better sound. The coliseum sounds only good when your there, on the floor preferably.

What's with just 4 reviews for what's really a pretty darn good show?

Nice rich sound from the board...exceptional set list....relaxed, easy pace to most songs (check out the lovely Bruce key-work on EYES)...

Best version of VALLEY ROAD I've heard them do...

...heckuva strong OTHER ONE from this time period....WHARF RAT fans should be drooling--Jerry's way into this one...I would argue this is one of the last truly 4-star shows. Some stand up for '91 but for me 1990 was the last true IT year, and this here's one of the last.

Very highly recommended.

Subject: Interesting Show
Legend has it that the boys dosed up pretty well for this show. I don't know, I could never tell. But, for sure, i remember there being an unsaid acknowledgment that this was their 25th birthday show. Another commenter pointed out the exceptional lighting on one of the songs and i agree. In fact, I thought Candace did i better than average effort on this show. All-in-all, nothing remarkable other than their usual remark-ability here. Not saying it was average, but it was a really solid performance.

Subject: 25 th Anniversary
Better today than they were 25 years ago.

I wonder if they even knew it was their silver anniversary.

Magnificent performance all the way through. Except for opening parts having some shaky unmixed sound this production fairly rocks, rather!

Every song, every expression is an absolute delight. Phil is stunning. They all mesh well around his commanding presence. Juicy-juice! Blender on puree'!

Wharf Rat kicks royally! And when I say Wharf kicks it must have been a great show.

Great, great, great show. More than enough for everyone and anyone.

Subject: great show!!
This show is the 'official' 25th anniversary - the boys first show as 'The Grateful Dead' was 12.04.65. Before then, they were the Warlocks. Anyhow, I was at this show, And I remember the lighting during 'The Other One' blew my already blown mind!!! This 'Other One' is a damn beast!
The Coliseum was a giant UFO beaming us to another dimension! Maybe it was the 3 blue unicorn blotters.....

Subject: Good Show
Full rich sound here. Typical for this period. Bruce adds a nice touch. Very nice recording. Lovelight is pretty hot. Kind of a summary of the whole show in one song. Na, that's probably just me.

Good show to crank when driving I think.
